Chapter Twelve

Cori waited for the water to boil in her kettle. Liz had to get back to Brennan House to check on her mom, plus she wanted to be there when Lauren returned from her date with the UPS guy. As had seemed to be happening more and more, their good-bye stretched out to ten, fifteen, maybe twenty minutes. It was clear to Cori at that point that neither of them wanted their time together to end. After Liz had agreed with Cori about how much time they spent together not pretending to enjoy each other’s company, something inside her had shifted. Something important.

She couldn’t put a finger on it. She’d been trying for the past hour as she rattled around her apartment, the clock closing in on midnight. She should be exhausted, but her brain was rolling too much around. She poured water into her cup, letting the bag of chamomile steep. It was far too easy to see herself in a real relationship with Liz, and she wasn’t sure what to do with that. She had no idea where Liz stood on the subject—and yeah, she should probably just ask her—but first, she needed to fulfill her part of the bargain. It was only a few more days and the wedding would be over, the ex and his new bride would be gone, and Liz would be figuring out when and how to get back to the city. Thinking about anything beyond the end of this coming weekend was stupid for her to do. Incredibly stupid. She had to shake Liz Brennan out of her head. At least for a little while.

She stirred a little honey into her tea, and her gaze landed on the two journals she’d carried up from the shop. Perfect. Those would distract her for a while, get her thinking of something other than what it felt like to have Liz standing so close to her as they poured wax or how she smelled like a mix of vanilla and something spicy that Cori couldn’t quite identify or how much she really wanted to kiss Liz…kiss her for real. She gave her head a literal shake. Yeah, maybe reading the journals would take her mind off all that. And maybe reading them would tire her eyes out, make her feel sleepy. Bear was curled up on his big round dog bed in the corner of her bedroom, and while she couldn’t see him from the kitchen, she could hear him as clearly as if he’d been right next to her, snoring like a truck driver. She sighed with envy, grabbed the journals, and followed his snuffles.

Once comfy in bed, propped against her headboard with her tea on the nightstand, Ernie curled up by her hip, she flipped open the journal from 1990 and began to read.

Ding!

Was that an elevator?

That would be weird. There wasn’t an elevator in her building…

Ding!

Okay, get on the damn thing and push the stupid button already.

Ding!

“Oh, for the
